Madge Gill

Madge Gill (1882-1961, UK)

Madge Gill, born as an illegitimate child, was brought up hidden to the public. She became a nurse and was initiated to spiritualism and astrology from her aunt. She married at the age of 25 and had three sons but her second son died of Spanish flu. The following year, Gill gave birth to a stillborn baby girl and lost the sight of her left eye due to heavy illness. From then on, she absorbed herself in drawing, embroidery, and knitting while maintaining connection with the spiritual world. In her drawings, a woman's face is forever repeated, at times appearing melancholic and at others with a trance-like expression.
